Thinking about being pregnant brings up a whole lot of memories. Mostly good, some bad and some downright embarrassing (seriously, why does no one talk about pregnancy gas??). But most of all it’s the last few weeks of:
- NO SLEEP
- OBSESSING OVER EVERY SINGLE TWINGE
- GOOGLING EVERY SINGLE TWINGE
- GOOGLING HOW TO INDUCE LABOR
- THE INABILITY TO ENJOY ANYTHING BECAUSE YOU ARE OBSESSING
- PEEING EVERY 5 MINUTES
- THE HORRENDOUS PRESSURE ON YOUR HIPS (AND VAGINA? COME ON!)
- BARELY ABLE TO EXERCISE
- LOOSE JOINTS
- …. THE LIST GOES ON, I KNOW YOU FEEL ME
So! Take it from someone who has gone through the end of three pregnancies and tried every trick in the book. This is my go-to list for inducing labor (especially RRLT.)

DRINK RED RASPBERRY LEAF TEA
What is it?
Not to be confused with the sweet tasting berries, it’s the leaves of the raspberry plant dried and ground up to be steeped for tea. It contains fragarine which has been known to:
- help tighten and tone the uterus and pelvic muscles.
- at the same time, help to relax these muscles which can speed and ease childbirth
My son’s labor was less than 6 hours and the actual pushing was 3 minutes.
My daughter’s labor was less than 4 hours total and 5 minutes of pushing.
I absolutely swear by this tea.
I’ll never go through another pregnancy without it.
Start with one cup per day in your 1st trimester and build up to three cups per day by your 3rd trimester. (I actually was drinking about 4 cups by the end, if you want to do this as well, please research and consult your physician!)
If you didn’t start drinking RRLT in the first trimester, no worries.
Because it’s a uterine tonic it can stimulate the pelvic floor muscles which can increase contractions and potentially start labor if you’re ready for it! Just be sure to start with one cup/day if you haven’t built up yet.

Which is why I drink red raspberry leaf tea before, during and after pregnancy for an extra boost of vitamins.
This study shows that women who drink the tea might have less of a chance of needing artificial membrane rupture or a c-section-
TRY CLARY SAGE OIL TO INDUCE LABOR
Things start getting serious to me when I bust out my bottle of Clary Sage. That means I’m well past week 37 and I am D.O.N.E.
Making a mix of 50ml carrier oil to 20 drops of Clary Sage is perfect. Rub a bit of this mixture on your belly to relax, and possibly stimulate contractions to get the party started whoop whoop!
It’s also helpful to put a drop or two on a cotton cloth and inhale. It’s very calming and can induce labor if you are ready to go into labor.
Using it during labor is useful because it can stimulate the release of oxytocin which helps contractions intensify and labor progress.
EAT A WHOLE PINEAPPLE
I know everyone and their dog has heard about this one but the reason I’m mentioning it is because it is by far one of the nicest ways to try to induce labor! Pineapples contain bromelain which is an enzyme that can soften the cervix and induce labor.
Here’s the kicker with pineapple though:
You might have to eat SEVEN for it to do anything. face palm.
So here’s my secret-
Juice them! If you have a juicer, great! If not, blend with a bit of extra water, strain and enjoy. Pineapple and date smoothies are helpful to get all that pineapple in and dates are said to help induce labor too!
With my second baby I had been eating pineapples that day like crazy.
That night my water broke at 230 am!

HAVE A WHOLE LOTTA’ S-E-X
Obviously this is hard to do when you are in full pregnant goddess mode but I highly recommend because there is more than one thing that can induce labor-
- sperm contains prostaglandins which can ripen the cervix and jumpstart contractions
- it can raise your levels of oxytocin which is used in a synthetic form to kickstart labor
- an orgasm can stimulate contractions (which means, ahem, you don’t NEED a partner😉)
My water broke with my first baby around 630 am and we had had sex at around 11pm the night before!
EXERCISE TO INDUCE LABOR
It’s 5am… you can’t sleep ’cause you are way too excited for this baby to make their debut…
What do you do?
Squats and lunges across your living room OF COURSE!
These can help to get your baby moving on downward. Same with going for a nice, long and leisurely walk. Don’t over do it! Try to enjoy it.
I followed along with this video on Youtube to try to induce labor with my 3rd baby and loved it!
I went into labor with my 3rd baby as I was furiously mopping the floor (must bring baby to a clean home, amiright?) when contractions started and I had her less than 4 hours later.)
TAKE ALL OF THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT
Your body will not go into labor unless it is ready. As much as I want to tell you that one or all of these things can 100% cause you to go into labor…
These things may have caused me to go into labor or it was something that I happened to do right before I would have gone into labor anyway.
When googling “how to induce labor,” and wanting to try everything, it’s so easy to find things that you will take as the absolute truth because you are desperate.
Slow down, try things because they are fun and don’t do the nasty ones
(like drinking castor oil- just don’t.)
TRY TO ENJOY THE LAST LITTLE WHILE
The last few weeks are hell. You’re tired, you’re huge, you’re just DONE.
Obsessing is not fun, especially if you have other children to contend with. I was so bad for this, I just couldn’t let it go and wait. I tried everything I could with each pregnancy to just HAVE THIS BABY ALREADY.
And looking back now, this attitude is so sad. You may never be pregnant again. Yes, it’s so good for it be over and meet your baby but looking back now-
I miss being pregnant.
There is a magical side to it that you only have for 9 months. And even though the last few weeks feel like eternity, they’re not. Enjoy the squirms and hiccups and the feeling of that beautiful connection before you meet your lovely baby.
